What it is
This is the change of the registered owner of a car or motorbike at the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) when you buy it from a private seller or a business.
What you need
- Sale contract signed on every page by buyer and seller, or an invoice if the seller is a business
- Buyer's DNI, NIE or residence card
- Proof of Transfer Tax (ITP, form 620), unless there is a business invoice
- Vehicle registered as active, with last year's road tax paid and no retention of title
What you pay
DGT fee 1.5: €55.70. On top of that, the buyer pays Transfer Tax (ITP) to the Valencian regional government: 6% as a rule; 8% if the vehicle is worth €20,000 or more, or is 5 years old or less with over 2,000 cc; 6% for electric, fuel-cell and hybrid vehicles under 2,000 cc, whatever their value; and a fixed amount of €10 to €280 (depending on engine size and age) for cars, 4x4s and motorbikes worth under €20,000 and over 5 years old, except classic vehicles. If a business sells with an invoice, there is no ITP.
How long it takes
You have 30 days from signing the contract. At a DGT office the new registration certificate is issued on the spot; online, the DGT sets no deadline and confirms by email.

What it is
This is the seller's notice to the DGT so that fines and liability for the vehicle stop being yours from that moment, even if the buyer has not yet completed the transfer.

- Vehicle registration number and the buyer's DNI, NIE or tax ID

DGT fee 4.1: €8.67.
How long it takes
The seller has 10 days from the sale (article 32.1 of the General Vehicle Regulation), and it is best done as soon as you sell. Online, the DGT emails the receipt in about a week.

What it is
This is the official DGT report on a vehicle registered in Spain: ownership, seizures, impoundment orders, liens, MOT (ITV) and other data, very useful before you buy.
What you need
- Registration number or chassis number (VIN)
- For the report on vehicles in your own name, your DNI

The basic report has no fee. The detailed report (full, liens or technical) carries DGT fee 4.1: €8.67 per report.
How long it takes
Online it is downloaded within the same procedure, and you can download it again free of charge for 4 days.

What it is
This is getting Spanish plates for a car or motorbike bought outside Spain, new or used.
What you need
- Original vehicle documents from the country of origin
- Technical data card issued by a Spanish ITV (MOT) station
- If used and from the EU: translated contract with Transfer Tax (ITP) paid, or an invoice if sold by a dealer
- If from outside the EU (including the UK, except Northern Ireland): H1 import certificate
- Proof of Registration Tax (form 576) and of road tax in your town hall
What you pay
DGT fee 1.1: €99.77 (mopeds, fee 1.2: €27.85). Separately you pay Registration Tax (form 576, Spanish Tax Agency), local road tax and, depending on the case, ITP or VAT.
How long it takes
The DGT has up to 3 months to decide. The registration certificate is posted to your home.

Bring all the original vehicle documents and take the vehicle to a Spanish ITV station to get the technical data card.

What it is
Temporary deregistration takes the vehicle off the road at the DGT for up to one year, renewable; permanent deregistration removes it for good at the end of its life.

- Owner's DNI, NIE or residence card
- Permanent: the vehicle, registration certificate and ITV card, handed in at an authorised scrapyard
- If the owner has died: sworn statement for deregistration due to death

Temporary: DGT fee 4.1, €8.67 (free if the vehicle was stolen). Permanent at an authorised scrapyard: no fee.
How long it takes
Temporary deregistration lasts up to one year and can be extended year by year, applying in the 2 months before it ends. Permanent deregistration is filed by the scrapyard, which gives you the destruction certificate and the proof of deregistration.

What it is
This is requesting an official copy when the document has been lost, stolen or damaged.

Registration certificate: DGT fee 4.4, €20.81 (free if it is due to a change of address or of the owner's personal details). Electronic technical data card: DGT fee 4.1, €8.67 (old paper cards are requested at an ITV station).
How long it takes
At a DGT office, the registration certificate is issued on the spot. Online or by phone, the duplicate arrives by post in about two weeks.

What it is
This is extending your Spanish driving licence before it expires, with no test, only a medical check.
What you need
- Valid DNI or passport (if you are a foreign national, your residence document)
- Medical fitness report from an approved driver medical centre, valid for 90 working days

DGT fee 4.3: €24.58. Free for people over 70. If for medical reasons you are renewed for fewer years, the fee is lower (€4.92 to €19.67).
How long it takes
You can apply up to 3 months before expiry without losing any days. You get a temporary licence, valid for 6 months for driving in Spain, and the card arrives by post in about a month and a half.

What it is
This is swapping your licence from another country for the Spanish equivalent: it is optional for EU and EEA licences, while licences from outside the EU and EEA are only valid for 6 months after you become resident in Spain and can only be exchanged if your country has an agreement with Spain. Timing depends on verification with your country; once the exchange is approved, the final card usually arrives in about 45 days.
What you need
- Exchange application on the official form
- Valid DNI, residence card or passport
- Proof of residence: residence card or EU citizen registration certificate
- Original, valid foreign driving licence
- Medical fitness report from an approved driver medical centre (a photo only if the DGT does not already have one)
What you pay
DGT fee 2.3: €28.87 if no tests are needed (the usual case for cars and motorbikes). If tests are required, DGT fee 2.1: €94.05.
How long it takes
When the procedure is done, your original licence is kept and you get a temporary one; the Spanish card arrives by post in about a month and a half.

What it is
This is the card that identifies the driver or the company in the digital tachograph of lorries and buses; it is valid for five years and is issued by the Valencian regional government.
What you need
- Driver: valid B+E, C, C1, D or D1 licence and proof of residence in the province
- Passport style photo and signature, scanned
- Company: DNI, NIE or company tax ID and proof of registered tax address
- Replacement after theft or loss: police report and sworn statement
- Signed authorisation so we can file it for you
What you pay
Valencian regional fee: €32.47 per card (Law 20/2017 on fees, art. 31.2-4, item 10; code A 09 on form 046). Replacement due to malfunction is free.
How long it takes
It can only be done online. Renewal can be requested no earlier than 30 working days before expiry. If you lose it or it is stolen, you have 7 calendar days to request a replacement and the regional government issues it within 5 working days.

Send us a good quality photo and signature and sign the authorisation; if you are self employed, you also need a company card.

What it is
This is the authorisation you need to carry goods for hire (often called the transport card); it does not expire, but the authorities check it every two years (the visado) to confirm you still meet the requirements.
What you need
- Your consent to the visado when the authorities notify you
- Vehicles over 3,500 kg (or over 2.5 t in international haulage for hire): proof of the transport manager and of financial standing
- Lease contracts for any vehicles you do not own
- Proof of payment of the fees
What you pay
Valencian regional fees (Law 20/2017, art. 31.2-4): €27.40 for issuing, renewing (visado) or reinstating the authorisation (code A 04) and €23.01 for the certified vehicle copies (code A 06).
How long it takes
Goods transport for hire is checked every two years, in the month set by the last digit of your tax ID (1 in January through 0 in November, skipping August and December). If it is not renewed, the authorisation loses its validity and you have one year to apply for reinstatement. No card is issued: the renewal is recorded in the Register of Transport Companies and Activities.
