The vehicle report is an official document issued by the DGT with the data held in the Vehicle Register. Anyone can request it, without the seller's permission, using just the number plate or the chassis number. It costs €8.67 in 2026 (fee 4.1) and is issued instantly through the DGT's online office or the miDGT app.
Which report to request
The DGT offers several: complete, technical data, charges, vehicles in your name and unregistered vehicles. If you are buying a used car, ask for the complete one: it brings the technical information and the charges together in a single document, so you do not need two.
What to look for in the report
Seizures and impounds
A seizure means a court or public authority has attached the car for the owner's debts. If you buy it with the seizure in force, the charge stays with the vehicle.
Retention of title
It appears when the car was bought on finance and the lender retained ownership until paid. Until it is cancelled, the seller cannot freely transfer it.
Roadworthiness test
Whether the ITV is valid and the result of the latest tests. The test history also records the mileage noted at each one, which is useful for spotting a tampered odometer.
Who the owner is
That the seller really is the owner on record. If not, ask why before going any further.
Do not hand over any money until the charge is cancelled and a new report shows it. A promise to "remove it after the sale" does not protect you: the charge travels with the car.
What the report does not tell you
The report reflects what is on the traffic register. It does not replace a mechanic's inspection, nor does it tell you whether the seller has unpaid road tax with their town hall. Ask for the last paid receipt, as part of the documents for a transfer between private individuals.
How we handle it at Equus Capital
We request and interpret the report for you, confirm with the seller that any charge is cancelled before you pay and, once everything is clear, file the transfer the same day. No nasty surprises after signing.
