A car on foreign plates can be driven in Spain temporarily. But once its owner becomes resident here, the vehicle must be registered in Spain within a short period. Delaying it risks fines and complicates insurance.
What you need before starting
- NIE and padrón (town hall registration): they prove your identity and address in Spain.
- The car's documents from your country: registration certificate and title.
- COC (European certificate of conformity), if available. It greatly simplifies the inspection.
- Proof of your previous residence abroad and of the date you moved, if you will claim the exemption.
The registration tax exemption for moving residence
The registration tax (IEDMT) has an exemption for people moving their residence to Spain from abroad with their own vehicle. Broadly, it requires having lived outside Spain for a minimum period, that the car is yours and you used it there before moving, that you apply on time and that you do not sell it for a period afterwards. The law sets those periods precisely; we check them against your documents before filing anything, because a badly prepared application is refused and the tax then has to be paid.
If the car comes from outside the EU, moving residence may also allow it to be imported free of duty and import VAT as a personal belonging, under similar conditions. See VAT when importing a car.
"The exemption for moving residence exists and is common, but it is not automatic: it must be requested, justified and filed on time."

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my home-country plates if I live in Valencia?
Not indefinitely. Once you are resident in Spain, the car must be registered here within a short period.
Is the exemption automatic?
No. It must be requested, proving your previous residence, ownership and use of the car before the move.
Can I sell the car after registering it with the exemption?
Not during the period set by law. If sold earlier, the tax becomes payable.
What about my driving licence?
That is a separate procedure, with its own rules depending on the issuing country. We review it with you in the same consultation.
Can you do it all for me?
Yes. We prepare the exemption application, the import inspection and the registration in Valencia.
